Akumal means
the Place of Turtles in the Mayan language. Every year, beginning
in May and through September, female sea turtles will make their way out of the
sea to the beaches where they will hopefully dig their nests and deposit eggs.
A female sea turtle may come ashore many times before finally laying her eggs. Early July you
can see baby turtles dig their way out of their nests and begin the journey back
to the sea.
Akumal is located only 25 minutes
south of Playa del Carmen. It is an ideal location if you are looking for a quiet
spot, somewhat secluded. I could probably describe it best as a small community
or neighborhood mainly North Americans, Canadians and a few Europeans. You will
find many private homes and Condo- Suites rentals. It is not 'A Resort' town and
you won't find any high rises or standard hotels. There are a few small restaurants
and a little shopping area.
